Information from the resource pack and delicious cakes at Leslie's event
Leslie Sugden is a long-term supporter of emerge poverty free who recently became one of the first people to hold an event using our new I Love School resource pack.
Leslie regularly holds events to raise funds for emerge poverty free, cooking meals, baking cakes and more to raise funds and awareness of the plight of children living in poverty across the world.
At the most recent event Leslie prepared food and held a bric-a-brac stall. She used the I Love School resource pack to tell guests a little bit about the vital work going on in Haiti.
Leslie's event raised over £200. This sum will go to help children growing up in one of the world's most notorious slums, Cité Soleil in Haiti.
Even before the devastating earthquake in January 2010, children in Cité Soleil faced severe hardship. Poverty is so extreme in the slums that many mothers are forced to feed their children on mud biscuits to stave of hunger pains, even though they know full well that the biscuits have no nutritional value.
But I Love School is providing a way out of poverty for over 800 children right in the heart of the slum. The children in the programme receive a quality education, daily meals and health monitoring, all in a safe environment.
Events like the one held by Leslie are vital to I Love School because not only do they raise much needed funds, they also raise awareness, bringing new supporters to the programme.

Leslie says that the success of an event like this lies in keeping it simple.
Here are her top tips
- Know you target audience - how are you going to invite them and what kind of event will attract the most people. I usually talk to people at church.
- Have a time limit - most people will worry if your event is too long. One or two hours is a good time limit. I usually limit events to the daytime (10am to 6pm), but it mostly depends on the age of your visitors: people over 50 will prefer to come over in the morning or for lunch rather than the late afternoon.
- Get help - Don't try to do it all on your own! I have the help of my two grandchildren and my husband.
- Enjoy yourself - if company and conversation are important to you, this is the perfect way to raise money for a good cause!
